Australian Interior Design Awards 2018

Australian Interior Design Awards 2018
With this year’s Australian Interior Design Awards recently done and dusted (or should that be won and dusted?), it’s a good time to take a look at some of the winners from 2018’s event to gather some inspiration.
The Premier Award for Australian Interior Design
Space & Time by Russell and George
This entry set out to challenge the way we use design within space and time. Does a design or layout need to be static? Can it change according to the time of day and what’s going on at that time? The design changes, cycling though various forms and functions – including restaurant, workspace, gallery and showroom – to demonstrate how nothing is permanent.
Emerging Interior Design Practice Award
Ritz & Ghougassian
This architect practice founded in 2015, impressed the judges with the scope of its portfolio and the fact that each project in the collection shows consistency and originality without being faddish, no matter what the remit and brief.
The Award for Sustainability Advancement
Woods Bagot for Wynyard Walk (Sydney)
This 180-metre connecting tunnel between Wynyard Station and Barangaroo in Central Sydney has been designed with commuters and pedestrians in mind. It’s also all about lowering carbon footprints, with LED lighting and a lifespan of at least 100 years. It makes using public transport attractive and convenient, as well as encouraging walkers to think about their lifestyle choices and how they can make more environmentally-friendly ones.
Residential Design Award
Bicker Design for Canning Cottage (Melbourne)
This 32sqm workers’ cottage, originally built in 1874, has been transformed into an effective and ergonomic living space for a young family of four (plus two dogs). The designers paid equal attention to space, materiality and details to make this small area work as a home. The interior has an innovative and welcoming design that will inspire other designers and architects working on inner-city housing projects as it shows how to make the best use of limited space.
